Off we went to Italy! YAY!!

1-13-24 Departed from Redmond airport two hours late due to weather and deicing delays, which caused us to miss our connection in Denver. We spent 4 hours trying to get another flight and thankfully a gate attendant helped us get tickets to Heathrow (London) airport, then on to Rome. We took British Airlines.

1-14-24 Arrived in Rome around 5 pm and was greeted with a friendly Italian kiss on both cheeks and a cappuccino by Mauro, Tony’s friend in Bend’s cousin. He drove us to the Double Tree Hotel in Roma Center. What a blessing to have him drive us, even though it was pretty hysterical and crazy with the traffic, he and Tony trying to communicate with Google Translate and me in the back seat using the little Italian I had learned before we left. Total Travel time from our house to the hotel was 33 hours!

We walked to a restaurant nearby and had pizza, pasta, tiramisu, and vino, of course.

1-15-24 Checked out the church across the street from our hotel- St. Mary’s. So incredibly big and beautiful. So much art.

Explored, and bought Tony an Italian hat called a Coppola. He looks authentic Italian and so handsome. Later we got picked up by Mauro and his lady friend, Alessia, and they took us to a piazza near the Tiber River. We walked around and they showed us one of the drinking fountains with Rome’s abundant fresh water. It has a narrow spout with a hole on the top. When the end of the spout is plugged with your fingers it sprays out the top. It’s called a nasoni which is also a nose. We ate an authentic Italian dinner with anti pasta(appetizers), prima, seconda(first and second course), Dulce(dessert), limoncello (digestive) and finally a cappuccino. It was so delicious and fun getting to know our new Roman friends. They knew the owners and introduced us to the chef. It was called el Drago ( the dragon). We learned to say it was perfecto!

We topped off the amazing evening with a drink on the rooftop bar at our hotel.

  • Trip Take-A-Ways

    Travel, Transportation. Connection. Food.

    broken image

    From Tony

    My nMission and Initial take-a-ways

Fact: Did you know that when you migrate from another country to the USA they take the liberty to simplify your name? I am sure you know this but its so mind-boggling. My family last name was Sperandeo and I am on am mission to reconnect with my family in Sicily. This includes redeeming my last name and getting an dual residency. This has been in the works for some time, now its getting closer to be reality.

    Food & drink

i have had multiple beers, glasses of wine & countless pizza. In my 56 years on this earth I have never tasted superior quality at a fraction of what we pay in the usa as I have in Italy & Sicily!

The USA food sources are just so different.. I had no clue.

But the thing I am the most impressed with is the people. Recently, Mauro my new friend in Rome who drove us all over & took us out to dinner (best meal ever), Claudio in florence, the owner of the mens clothing shop, everything is made & selected by him and labeled in his name. Chiara from the car rental company, Georgia at the hotel in Sicily who was so into helping me reunite me with my family there & the man at the cemetery that looked up two old log books thAt proved my family name & my connection. These books looked like the original manuscipts of the old testament 😂

So good connecting with my old friend Robert & Carey in Florence, from Bend too.

At the end of the day I am greatful and thankful for all involved especially my loving wife. @⁨Wife Sprando⁩ ❤️🍕🍷🇮🇹🤩
